Owing to the rise in water level, urban colonies have started getting inundated and boats are plying on city streets. The water level of the river Ganga has already crossed the danger mark and it is still rising.

AUTHORITIES MONITOR THE SITUATION

The rise in water level is being monitored continuously by the authorities. Given the speed at which the water levels in Ganga and Varuna are rising, the administration has set up a control room and deployed officers of different departments and issued an alert to the people, along the banks of the river.

Now, all eyes are on the water level of Ganga, which has been kept on hour-wise monitoring. The ghats are badly affected by the rising waters. Manikarnika Ghat has already got submerged and the cremations are being done on a platform above the road. At Harishchandra Ghat, however, the cremations are being done on the street. With all options gone and roads cut off, people are now waiting hours for cremation at the ghats.

WATER CROSSES DANGER MARK

Due to the rise in water levels in Ganga and Varuna, yellow line areas are badly affected. The water release from Madhya Pradesh, Hamirpur’s Cane and Betwa and from Kanpur’s Ganga barrage has resulted in flooding in the district. As per the authorities, the water level is expected to reduce by Friday but the situation will remain severe for next couple of days.

Significantly, the water level of Ganga has crossed the danger mark of 71.26m in Varanasi. According to the Central Water Commission, on Tuesday morning the water level of Ganga reached 71.74 meters, which is currently flowing .48 metres above the danger mark. The speed of rise in the water level in Ganga has been maintained at one centimeter per hour since 7am.

REVERSE FLOW AFFECTS COASTAL AREAS

Due to the reverse flow of the Ganges, the river has also turned towards Varuna. Owing to the reverse flow, water has now entered the houses in the coastal areas of Varuna.

The road has been closed due to the rise of water on Assi-Nagwan main road. The government has started boat operations to help people stuck in these areas. On Sunday morning, the water level was at 70.96m.

India Today TV visited several ghats such as Nakhi Ghat, Manikarnika, Raj Ghat and Maruti Nagar area of the Holi city, where the situation is severe. The authorities have increased surveillance and are making sure that people residing in low-lying areas are safe.

Fatima, 32, a resident of Nakkhi Ghat area, said the water had reached up to their first floor and the entire family is struggling to get the basic items. Fatima added that the entire area was flooded and they had no option but to use a boat to go out. The 32-year-old added that the administration has not even provided rations for them.

WORK AFFECTED

This area, which is known to house weavers, had a deserted look. Their work has been badly affected due to the flood. The rooms are immersed under the water and the workers are facing an acute financial crisis since their work has paused.

SITUATION IN MARUTI NAGAR AREA

Due to the rising water level in Ganga, water has entered multiple homes in Maruti Nagar area, affecting hundreds of people. People from areas in Madarwa, Maruti Nagar, whose houses have been completely submerged, were being evacuated from their homes and shifted to safer places.

Shakuntala Shukla, 39, said the drains, too, have also started rising. Shukla’s house was completely submerged under water. People living around this area have demanded that the area be patrolled by police and NDRF personnel.

WHAT DM SAID

Speaking to India Today TV, Varanasi district magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma said relief has been provided to the affected people. NDRF and local administration boats are carrying out rescue operations. He also said that arrangements for the distressed have been made at the relief camp.

He added that several teams are working to assist people in reaching safer places. “We expect the water flow will slow down after Friday and flow, too, is likely to reduce.”
